Practice Patterns: 9-Ball

Today’s tip is a good practice drill for 9-ball, and will put a bit of pressure on you to position the cue-ball correctly on each shot.  Start with the following setup:

Starting position for 9-ball drill

The 1, 2 and 3 balls are one diamond from the rail.  The 7, 8, and 9 balls are touching the rail, and the 4, 5, and 6 balls are between the others.

Some people would have you start with ball in hand, but I like to start with the cue ball in the center of the table.  Now, simply run the balls in order as you would in 9-ball.  The exception here is that you may not touch any other ball as you are running them out, until you shoot it into a pocket.

It looks like this should be fairly easy, but rest assured you must focus on each shot, and make sure you don’t get out of position.  When done properly, each shot should seem effortless.

Good luck, and let me know how you do!
